The Acton Model

The Power of Peer Feedback

At Acton, feedback is a daily rhythm — 360 reviews, writer's workshops, and character callouts — teaching learners to speak truth with kindness and grow from it.

At Acton Academy, feedback isn't a single event. It's a daily rhythm that shapes how our learners see themselves and how they show up for others.

While 360 reviews are important milestones, they're just one part of a much deeper culture of peer feedback. You'll see it happening routinely in writer's workshops, badge critiques, running team meetings, and even during the daily closing reflections.

Here, feedback is not about judgment. It's about seeing clearly and growing from what you see.

360 Reviews Once each session, every learner participates in 360 reviews. They reflect on their own progress and receive honest, structured feedback from peers about how they're showing up as teammates, leaders, collaborators, and friends.

This practice mirrors the feedback systems used in the world's best organizations. It shows learners at an early age that character, contribution, and consistency matter, not just academic accomplishment.

These structured reflections help learners spot patterns by asking "Where are my strengths?" or "Where might I need to reflect more?" Each repetition builds self-awareness and ownership.

Learning to Refine and Improve During writer's workshops, feedback becomes specific and practical. A learner might offer a first draft of an essay or story and ask peers for honest input. Instead of vague praise, they receive targeted suggestions such as "needs stronger evidence" or "your word choice is repetitive".

This process reinforces the development of a growth mindset. Over time, feedback stops feeling like criticism and starts feeling like valuable input. Learners become less defensive about their work and more committed to improvement.

Celebrating What Matters One of the most powerful moments in our studios happens every single day during closing reflection.

Learners gather in a circle and offer "character callouts", publicly recognizing peers who demonstrated heroic traits like grit, kindness, leadership, or perseverance.

When a learner hears, "I want to call out a teammate for staying patient and helping three different learners with their math today," it does more than boost confidence. It reinforces important values for the Acton community.

These daily moments build a habit to notice and celebrate the good in others.

Learning Feedback Skills Both giving and receiving feedback are skills that take practice.

Early on, many learners default to simple number ratings because it is quicker. However, they soon discover how unsatisfying it is to receive a low score with no explanation. "That isn't helpful at all!"

After that, their own offered feedback becomes more specific, balanced, and kind. They learn to speak truth with care.

Receiving feedback requires its own kind of courage. With a growth mindset and practice, even challenging comments become tools for improvement rather than personal attacks.

The Rising Tide From formal 360 reviews to daily character callouts, peer feedback at Acton Academy creates a rising tide that lifts all boats.

Your child learns that their actions affect others. They discover that excellence is built through consistent effort and honest reflection. Most importantly, they begin to see themselves not as finished products, but as works in progress, a mindset that will serve them for life.

In a world where many adults still struggle with receiving feedback, Acton learners graduate fluent in it. They know how to speak honestly with kindness, receive input with humility, and continuously improve.

And that may be one of the greatest gifts they can bring to the world.
