Please note, we do not offer camps during these breaks. Be sure to review the calendar to ensure it aligns with your family’s needs.
Children with learning disabilities, particularly ADHD, often face significant challenges in Acton Academy’s learner-driven environment. While the self-paced, flexible model might seem beneficial, many ADHD learners struggle with the independence and self-direction required. Without the structured guidance, consistent routines, or constant supervision they often rely on, these children may find it difficult to stay focused, manage their time, and complete tasks. The open, collaborative setting can also be overwhelming, leading to increased distraction and frustration. Additionally, Acton does not offer specialized support services, such as IEPs or tailored interventions, which some learners need to succeed. Families should carefully consider these factors and understand that learners requiring consistent one-on-one guidance or highly structured environments may not thrive in this model.
Learners who thrive at Acton Academy are those who are curious, self-motivated, and open to taking ownership of their education. These learners enjoy hands-on, project-based learning and are willing to set goals, reflect on their progress, and embrace challenges. They are often independent thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and collaborative team members who value freedom within structure. Acton Academy is ideal for learners who are eager to grow at their own pace and are excited by the idea of pursuing mastery over standardized testing.
Learners who may not thrive at Acton Academy are those who struggle with self-direction or need constant supervision or re-direction. Acton’s model works best for independent learners who can set goals and take responsibility for their progress. Those who prefer traditional, teacher-led classrooms, struggle with staying focused or need a lot of external motivation may find Acton’s learner-driven approach challenging.
We are currently accepting students ages 5-11. Any learner beyond 11 will require a family interview, to ensure everyone in the family is ready for this academic model and personal freedom.
We believe children learn best in a multi-age environment, rather than age-based grade levels. Our learners are generally grouped from 5-7, 8-11, 12-14, and 15-18 (TBD by assessment).
Students work through subject mastery in their individualized curriculum, at their own pace.
We believe that each of us has a special calling in life, and a series of trials and tests that must be faced with integrity and purpose in order to live a satisfying and fulfilled life. Our mission is to prepare your child for their special journey.
We believe in encouraging students to take responsibility for their own behavior and hold those around them to a high standard. When something isn’t working, we want our students to work together to solve the problem, not look for an adult to solve it for them. This creates a sense of independence and confidence that will serve them well in all areas of life.
We believe in the power of balance. Using incredible, self-paced e-Learning tools, we are able to provide the rigor needed for learning math, vocabulary, spelling and grammar. This amounts to on average, 45-60 minutes each day, while freeing up the rest of the day for engaging, project-based learning. The two are highly complementary.
Yes. We are accredited by IALDS and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
We believe each of our learners will find a passion — something they love and have a gift to do. They will use this gift to serve others and fulfill a need they are passionate about in the world. Our role is to empower and support them through this journey.
For learners aged 5-7 using Montessori tools at Acton Academy, progress tracking is simple and hands-on:
Work Plans: Each learner has a personalized work plan that shows the activities they can choose from each day. They check off activities as they finish them.
Montessori Tools: They use special materials like beads, boards, and cards to practice math, reading, and other skills. These tools let them see and feel their progress as they work.
Guided Reflection: At the end of the day or week, learners talk with their guide or classmates about what they worked on and what they learned.
Visual Progress Charts: They might use a chart or sticker system to see how much they’ve practiced and what comes next.
This process makes tracking fun and helps them feel proud of their achievements!
Learners 8-18 track their progress in core skills through a combination of personal goal-setting, individualized learning plans, and data-driven tools:
SMART Goals: Learners set weekly and daily goals for their academic work, ensuring progress aligns with their personal learning pace.
Online Platforms: Adaptive software such as Khan Academy or Lexia provides real-time data on mastery levels, enabling learners to track completion and accuracy of assignments.
Badges and Portfolios: Progress is demonstrated through earning badges, which reflect mastery of specific skills, and compiling work in digital portfolios.
Accountability Systems: Learners share their progress during daily or weekly check-ins with peers or guides, fostering ownership of their learning journey.
This approach empowers learners to take responsibility for their education, emphasizing mastery over mere completion.
Acton Academy integrates Montessori methods for ages 5-7 by using hands-on materials, encouraging independence, and fostering self-paced learning.
Children choose activities from a prepared environment, using Montessori tools for math and language arts. Progress is tracked through work plans and visual tools, allowing learners to see their growth and focus on mastery.
Acton is not a religious-based school. We honor and respect all religions and the right of every family to practice their faith.
We believe that teaching religious beliefs is a personal decision best guided by each family.
While religion may be explored in the context of history and civilization studies, it is not a formal part of the Acton educational model.

At Acton Academy, learners try out for local sports teams by following state guidelines through “Tim Tebow laws.” Families should contact their local school district or athletic department to understand eligibility requirements, such as proof of residency or academic standing. Acton learners may need to provide documentation, like progress reports or a school affidavit, and must meet the same tryout and practice standards as other students. This ensures they have equal opportunities to join and compete on local teams.
Our namesake, Lord John Emerich Edward Dahlberg Acton (1834-1902) was a Victorian scholar of Freedom who saw liberty not as a license, but as the freedom to do what was right. He was suspicious of power for the sake of power, which led to his most famous quote: “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” We celebrate his defense of economic, political and religious freedom.

Children who love to learn, are curious, self-motivated, and able to work independently. If your child requires one on one attention, or is unable to focus for long periods of time, this environment would not serve them well.
We are not trained to serve children with serious learning disabilities. If your child has an IEP plan, needs one on one attention, or is unable to focus for long periods of time, this environment is unlikely a good fit.

Students set daily, weekly, and session goals in our online system — Journey Tracker.
Journey Tracker also provides real-time progress data, which we use to identify areas of struggle and close any learning gaps. Students do not move past a skill until achieving mastery. Additionally, each student manages an individual portfolio to showcase their best work.
While not a Montessori school, we do use the best of Montessori methods: mixed-age classrooms, student choice within limits, large blocks of work time, learning through “discovery,” and freedom of movement in the classroom. We incorporate 21st century e-Learning tools, hands on projects, and the Socratic method for meaningful discussions.
While we expose children to the importance of mindfulness, ethical principles, and the significance of religion in history and the development of society, we are not a religious school.
We value and respect each individual’s beliefs.

Although we do not currently offer organized team sports, many of our students participate in city leagues, and all are applicable to tryout for local school teams.
