How to Stay Socratic at Home (Or Not)

At school, guides ask questions instead of giving answers. Here's how parents can borrow the Socratic spirit at home — and when to simply connect instead.

At school, your child's guide doesn't give answers. They ask questions.

"What are your options?" "What do you want to try next?" "What do you know now that you didn't before?"

This is called being Socratic, and it's not random. It's a role guides play on purpose, like a game with rules. In that game, they don't lecture, rescue, or advise. They ask, listen, and reflect. Over time, this helps learners build ownership, resilience, and self-direction.

So... should parents do the same at home?

Sometimes.

When your child forgets their shoes or spills a drink, you probably don't need to channel Socrates. But when they're frustrated with a mistake, stuck in a conflict, or facing a hard choice, a well-placed question can open powerful thinking.

Try simple, honest prompts like:

  • "What do you think you'll do about it?"
  • "Want to talk it out or think it through on your own?"
  • "What would you say to a friend in this situation?"
  • "What matters most to you right now?"

You can also use the Socratic spirit outside of problems:

  • At dinner: "What was the best part of your day? Why?"
  • During conflict: "What do you think the other person might have felt?"
  • In games or stories: "What would you have done differently?"

The goal isn't to trap your child into a "right" answer. It's to keep the thinking ball in their court.

Remember: you're not their guide. You're their parent. You don't have to play the Socratic role full-time. But knowing the "game" helps you choose when to join in and when to just love, hold, laugh, or lead.

At school, questions are the tool. At home, connection is the goal.

Sometimes those overlap. Sometimes they don't.

And that's okay.
