If you're drawn to homeschooling because you want your child to learn at their own pace, free from a rigid system, Acton Academy gives you that same freedom — plus a studio full of peers, daily Socratic discussion, and guides who keep learners accountable. Acton is, in a sense, the community version of the values that draw families to homeschooling.
Is Acton Academy like homeschooling?
In spirit, yes. Like a thriving homeschool, Acton is learner-driven: children set goals, manage their time, and pursue real interests instead of marching through a one-size-fits-all curriculum. The difference is the setting — a purpose-built studio with mixed-age peers and trained guides, five days a week.
What does a micro-school offer that homeschooling can't?
- A tribe of peers. Learners hold one another accountable, give each other feedback, and tackle group Quests — social learning that's hard to recreate at the kitchen table. See the power of peer feedback.
- Socratic discussion. Daily, guide-led discussions push thinking in ways a single parent rarely can sustain across every subject.
- Built-in structure and accountability. Goal-setting, exhibitions, and studio agreements keep learners moving without a parent playing taskmaster.
- Your evenings back. You stay the parent, not the full-time teacher.
If you already homeschool, you can borrow some of this — here's how to stay Socratic at home.
What does a typical day look like?
Studios run Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A morning Socratic launch leads into project-based Quest work, a block of self-paced core skills, recess and lunch, and a closing reflection. Learners own their goals for the day and track them in our Journey Tracker system.
Can I use a Florida scholarship for Acton instead of homeschooling?
Yes. Acton Academy North Broward is a registered Step Up For Students provider for the PEP and UA scholarships, which Florida families can apply toward tuition — including many families who would otherwise homeschool. See our scholarships page for details.
Which is right for your family?
Choose homeschooling if you want full control and one-on-one time at home. Choose a micro-school like Acton if you want your child's independence plus a community of peers, Socratic guides, and structure — without giving up your role as the parent. Come visit a studio and see the difference for yourself.
